Le Touquet - 2015

June - 2015

A helicopter convoy of eight aircraft, including two R44’s and six R22’s, flew over the channel to the beautiful French town of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage. The trip was a great success, brilliant flying, fabulous evening entertainment and good company. Big thanks to all our students that came along!

Some patchy low level cloud almost spoiled the party but soon cleared to reveal a beautiful Saturday morning. This allowed the Blackbushe fleet make the trip down to Goodwood for the pre-trip planning and briefing.
After some coffee and a good chin wag between the Blackbushe & Goodwood pilots, the pre-convoy briefing commenced. Deputy Chief flying instructor Toby Chamberlain would Pilot the lead aircraft in the convoy to Le Touquet, routing via Hastings before turning direct to our destination.

With the planning complete and flight plan filed it was time to turn the keys. Eight Robinson helicopters all starting up on the Goodwood apron was quite a sight. The loose formation headed directly south east from Goodwood join the coast at Littlehampton. From Littlehampton the convoy continued down the beautiful sea side transiting Shoreham Airfield and overflying Brighton before turning directly for Hastings.

Once abeam Hastings it was time for the interesting part! The formation turned direct to Le Touquet Airport. For many of the pilots it was the first time flying over the English Channel. The hazy sky and open water can blur the natural horizon and create challenging flying conditions, however the coastline of northern France became visible after approximately 10mins.

The formation coasted in at Le Touquet before turning onto final approach for the main runway.

Spectators looked on as 8 helicopters came into a hover above the main runway and proceeded to taxi to the hard stands.

Once we had shut down and we were joined by the French press! The local newspaper had come out to photograph the arrival of the English fleet.

After an exhilarating flight over the channel and all the excitement of our very own photoshoot, it was time to hop on our bicycles and head off into town.

As a result of last year’s perfect timing with the Le Touquet music festival. We thought we would do the same again this year! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a great way for students and instructors from Blackbushe and Goodwood to meet each other.

The evening started with a typically French dinner with the crew enjoying snails, very rare steaks and red wine. After the meal we were treated to brilliant evening entertainment at the music festival.

Thanks to all who came along and we look forward to the next few Phoenix Fly In trips planned this year. Click to see our up and coming trips…
