Our Courses

Private Pilot’s Licence - The Helicopter Private Pilot’s Licence, or PPL (H), entitles an individual to fly a helicopter for their personal use. This can be purely for fun or alternately for a practical transport solution, getting you from A to B in a fast and convenient manor. The European PPL Licence will allow you to hire and fly helicopters all over the continent.

Professional Pilots Course - The Professional Pilot Course is designed for students that wish to learn to fly helicopters with the intention of becoming a commercial pilot right from the start. The course differs to our other courses in its semi-integrated structure. The course combines the PPL, R44 Rating, Hour Building and CPL all into one effectively structured course.

Commercial Pilots Licence - The commercial pilot’s course is for pilots that have already completed their PPL, Required Hour Building and all CPL/ ATPL Theory Exams. The CPL course is a practical course that involves a minimum of 35 hours flight training of which 5 hours are conducted at night.

Type Ratings – After completing the Private Pilot’s Licence you will be licensed to fly the type of aircraft you learnt to fly in. For example if you completed your training on an R22, you are licenced to fly R22’s only. To fly additional aircraft you must first complete a short training course for that particular type. These courses are called type rating courses. Phoenix offer type rating courses on both the Robinson R22 and R44.

Goodwood Aerodrome

Goodwood aerodrome is an ideal site to learn to fly, it is based in uncontrolled airspace and has large helicopter hovering areas. Goodwood is an aerodrome steeped in history, once being a Spitfire base during the Second World War. It forms part of the Goodwood estate with a motor racing circuit around the aerodrome, and of course the famous horse racing track just to the north. The majority of our flight training away from the aerodrome is undertaken either along the West Sussex and Hampshire coast line, which makes for spectacular scenery. Another advantage to our location is the favourable weather conditions that this part of the South of England receives. Due to our location by the South Downs, we often receive great flying weather while the rest of the country experiences rain or low cloud. Read more about Goodwood.

Blackbushe Airport

Located in the heart of Surrey this airport is just a stone’s throw from the M3 and M25 making it ideal for London, Reading, The Thames Valley and Hampshire. It has always been very friendly to helicopter activity and although in uncontrolled airspace you will find yourself very busy with Heathrow, the London Zone and Farnborough right on your door steep. We have an office in the main terminal building but in early 2013 shall be opening our own dedicated building allowing us plenty of room for expansion. If it's too far for you to come and train here with us but always fancied doing the London Heli Lanes it’s perfect for that too. Read more about Blackbushe.

Solent Airport

Our offices will initially be located in the Fareham Innovation Center while our further expansion plans are developed at the airfield. The Innovation center forms part of the regeneration project at Lee on Solent.
We shall be doing all our standard training here from PPL(H), CPL(H) and Type ratings and will also be running Helicopter Charter Operations and Helicopter Pleasure Flights around the Solent and Portsmouth

Getting to Solent Airfield is relatively easy from both Portsmouth, Southampton and further afield with easy access to the M27.
The airfield is going through major regeneration over the next few years with innovative businesses being attracted to the area.  The area forms perfect flying conditions with views over the solent to the Isle of Wight and with our standard training area in the New Forest you simply cannot find a more exciting area to fly in.

A very enjoyable flight. A birthday present for myself and friend and trial first flight. Hoping to do the flight down The Thames next year for our 40th and 60th birthdays!

Phoenix for me is now more than just a school to learn how to fly, it has a very homely feel to it, where students and the staff have become a family.

Stuart Russell (Student)

We would like to say a huge thank you for all your help and service on our big day. It was an amazing day and your contribution helped our wedding be the day we wished for and a success. We appreciate all your efforts on the day. Lots of Love Vanessa & Ravi

I really enjoyed my training with Phoenix Helicopters (even with the stresses of a tight budget and timescale!), and having now passed my PPL I will definitely be continuing my training and self-fly hire there.

Sean Larsen (Student)

Easy to find with excellent parking. All staff, including Toby, our pilot, were very approachable and happy to chat. Great atmosphere. A thoroughly enjoyable experience all round.

Phoenix Helicopter Academy at Goodwood is a great place to learn to fly. Relaxed, yet totally professional. The instructors go out of their way to ensure you get the best training. Highly recommended!

Kevin Piotrowicz (Student)

Thank you all at Phoenix, SO much! I think it's finally sinking in for Matt exactly what went on yesterday. His maiden chopper flight was wonderful and he had a great day. Such a smooth flight. Really can't thank you enough for making the day so special

Aimee and Matt (Charter)

Just a short note to express our thanks to all at Phoenix Blackbush, for a truly enjoyable experience. Our special thanks go to Simon Halfpenny not only for his cheerful sense of humour but also for his skill as a pilot, over the last 25 years I have flown with many pilots most being military or EX.& I can say that Simon ranks amongst the best that I have had the pleasure to fly with. We both had a fantastic flight and thoroughly enjoyed it.  It was a lovely clear day which helped make the views over West Sussex stunning.
Having a flight in a helicopter is something I have wanted to do for years, it was great to enjoy such an experience.
